Everybody stares at the network speeds because for 40 years that was the slowest link in the chain (when we were all on dial up modems). About 5 - 10 years ago, the network got faster than your local hard drives can be read. In reality, customers are RARELY limited by the network anymore.
You can read about vaults (20 pods) here: and the algorithm we use to split your files across 20 vaults here: The limit being your file is accepted by one pod ( ) and then it is split into 17 parts, 3 parity parts are calculated, and it is sent to 20 different servers in 20 different locations to store, then after those 20 servers commit it to disk they "ACK" (acknowledge to the pod you posted to) that every thing is safely committed, AND ONLY THEN does the pod you are connected to send back status of "It's Safe and Golden and Stored" to the Backblaze client. that’s theoretical speed, in practice it is way slower as evidenced by my and several other posts.Ībsolutely, but the 10 Mbits/thread are "theoretical limits" that are hit by the Backblaze datacenter. 30 threads total at 10 mbit each equals a theoretical backblaze upload speed of 300mbit/s or 37.5mb/s. Then in another post (self acclaimed backblaze developer) writes (paraphrasing) 1 thread = 10mbit = 1.25mb/s. What about you guys? Are you able to max your uploads? Do you get faster uploads than 30mbit/s? Is it really just me, even though my set up in theory should be pretty optimal?īACKBLAZE SPEEDTEST (strangely shows only 97mbps, so clearly not unlimited like they promised)

I’ve read their tutorial on how to maximise and optimise the conditions to achieve max speed - basically my described setup. Sure, I’m not flawless, there is a chance I’ve overlooked something, but I honestly cannot see what that should be or what else I can do to improve my speeds. What gives? Is it just marketing and a lie? Since most people don’t have such fast connections, they’re just hoping no one notices? Because 30mbit/s on a cabled 1gbps connection when they advertise “unlimited speed” is laughable and pathetic.

Yes, I’ve made sure no other computers are using the bandwidth - it’s just my macbook pro with bacblaze, and that’s it.Yes, I’ve set backblaze to “continous”.Yes, I’ve disabled all energy settings on my Mac, preventing it to go to sleep.Yes, I’ve disabled “throttling” and moved the slider all the way over to “performance” (max speed).

Yes I’ve updated all my software - router firmware, backblaze app, OS-updates.Yes, I’ve rebooted the router, and even factory reset it.The upload speed hovers between 4mbit/s and 30mbit/s. Doesn't matter if it's 1 thread, 6 threads, 10 or 30 threads. I am completely unable to achieve anywhere close to their ambitiously advertised "unlimited speed", I'm maxing out at 30mbit/s in the bacblaze app, no matter what I try. Internet: Cabled 1Gbps fiber connection 1000/1000.I still think they should change it or make it more clear and spell out that it means "no throttling and not unlimited MB/s".
Brianwski and some of the other community readers says it means unthrottled. My personal understanding of "unlimited speed" is Bacblaze being able to saturate my connection. So what does "unlimited speed" actually mean? Does it mean we won't throttle you after a certain amount of data trasnferrred (ie decrease your speed after the 1st TB uloaded, and then slow you down further on the 2nd TB uploaded) or does it mean unlimited speed, so no matter how fast your connection is, you will be able to maximise it / saturate it, should you wish to do so. It’s right there on their product page for personal cloud backup They promise unlimited files, unlimited file size and unlimited speeds. It may or may not be misleading customers, it depends on semantics. But most of you were nice.īackblaze’s advertising may be up for interpretation. This is a great community, with a lot of passionate, but also reasonable people who can have a conversation, disagree but remain civil - well, most of you were civil, one person PM-ed me a hateful message, you know who you are, and I have reported you to reddit.
